Reviews:

"The Forge launched its new season and if this production is anything to go by we are in for a good run this year. I'm not sure if the rest of the plays will be quite as bizarre and confusing as this one, but if the production values are as high, we have nothing to worry about.

Saving Grace was written in 1994, but time hasn't dimmed a certain, weird charm. It is about a homeless, 18-year-old woman who is befriended by a much older carpenter.

Grace is a wizz on the Spacies and Gerald seems like a bit of a space cadet. It is a strange relationship. She swears like the devil and he believes he is Jesus Christ, so you know things are going to end badly. Just how badly, I cannot say.

Saving Grace is a funny play with some exceedingly dark and bizarre moments. Considered thematically and dramatically, as a whole, it didn't seem particularly coherent to me. It left a lot of loose ends to be tied up.

What is certain is that it is a very fine production with intelligent direction and a very high standard of acting. John Pheloung produced a remarkably credible characterisation in going for a sincere and charming Jesus, rather than a charismatic one.

For someone fresh out of drama school, Kathleen Burns was outstanding. Occasionally, she played the character than the truth of the line, but it was an impressive performance overall. Her phrasing of lines, in particular, was very striking.

The play was funny in both senses of the world. I"m not sure if that was its problem or its saving grace."
