Work Experience

(Secondary and Tertiary students only)

The Court Theatre encourages young people to appreciate all that goes on behind the scenes in a professional theatre company. High school and tertiary students are welcomed for work experience in production roles (we do NOT offer work experience in acting) and often sit in on the rehearsal process. We can also arrange internships for tertiary level students wishing for more substantial training/experience.

Work experience/internships have been given in the following areas:
Directing
Lighting
Marketing
Event Management
Costuming
Set construction

Individual work experience/internship placements are considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to the applicant's age, availability and skill level; as well as the availability of relevant staff. With our busy production schedule, The Court Theatre cannot always accommodate work experience students, so it is important to request placements well in advance of the desired dates.

It is recommended that students have some familiarity with their desired area of work experience. Each work experience trainee must be mature and responsible, and have an understanding that they will be entering a busy and professional environment.

How to apply:

A teacher or supervisor must apply for all requests for work experience. Simply download the work experience request form by clicking here, complete the form and fax, mail, or email it to: The Court Theatre Education Manager on 963-0890, PO Box 268 Christchurch, or education@courttheatre.org.nz.

Please understand that we may not able to provide a placement for the dates you request.

Expectations of Work Experience Participants:

Usual hours are 9.30am - 4pm. Please be prompt.
Dress code is tidy and casual, but bring some old clothes and shoes in case you are asked to do any painting.
Please pay attention to your personal hygiene.
Always follow the instructions of the person you are assigned to.
Observing a rehearsal is a privilege and you are there to watch. Please do not talk or offer suggestions, as this can be very disruptive to the actors and director. Please do not read, write (unless taking notes about your observation), or doodle drawings while you are observing rehearsal.
When performers are warming up or learning lines, please do not interrupt them.
If you are asked to do something you feel uncomfortable about or unsafe with, e.g. climbing ladders, please tell the person in charge.
The Court Theatre can be a confusing building to get around. Please make sure you know where you are going and do not wander freely during breaks. Just ask for directions if you are unsure where you are supposed to be.
Please keep in mind that you are in a professional work environment, with paying customers and conduct yourself accordingly at all times.
You will be asked to complete a work experience evaluation form upon completion of your placement. The Court's Education Manager will give this to you.
