Drama Classes

10 - 12 year olds | Tues 4 - 5pm; 13 - 16 year olds | Mon 4 - 5pm

The Court Theatre currently offers two levels of youth drama classes, which run during the four school terms. Classes are for 10-12 year olds and 13-16 year olds. By working individually, as well as in groups. Drama classes provide students the opportunity to improve communication and presentation skills, with the goal of greater self-awareness and confidence. Terms 1-4 are structured to build a progression of skills, while also being inclusive and appropriate for first time students at the start of each new term.

Both classes integrate vocal skills, body awareness, communication and presentation skills, with a focus on fun and group participation. We limit our classes to a maximum of 18 students to enable the tutors to work with students individually as well as in small and large groups.

MISSION STATEMENT FOR DRAMA CLASSES

Each term focuses on a specific skill set (e.g. voice/physicality, improvisation, creating a character etc.), building a collection of techniques over the year that participants can use in performance. However, new students (or those who can only attend for one or two terms) are neither left behind nor penalised as the year progresses.

Junior classes have a “creative play” attitude – learning through theatre games, short script work or other practical activities. Discipline is a key factor of all classes, as is respecting other participants whilst building confidence and creativity as much as performance skills.

In senior classes a similarly strong focus is placed on practical application, but there is more reference to some of the theory behind the varying techniques taught. Exercises and games are still used, but with more specific focus and to build the students’ understanding of the varying methods used by actors.

VENUE/CLOTHING

All classes are held in The Court Theatre rehearsal rooms; located in the Arts Centre, 20 Worcester Boulevard. Students need to ensure they are in the foyer ten minutes before the start of class. Clothing should provide freedom of movement and comfort for warm-ups and class exercises (i.e. flat shoes/sneakers and track pants/loose trousers).

If you are interested in either of these classes, please send a resistration form (with payment) to Drama Classes, The Court Theatre, PO Box 268, Christchurch (or bring it in to our Box Office)  to confirm your place in the class.

PLEASE NOTE: Class size is restricted to 18 students maximum - if no spaces are available you may be put on our waiting list for future terms.
