Education & Training at The Court Theatre

The Court Theatre has a well-established and comprehensive Education Programme.

For many people, their first experience of the magic of theatre is through our Kids Shows, on every school holidays at the theatre. Many aspiring young actors take part in our Drama Classes to gain the benefit of training from theatre profesionals to begin building the students' skills.

The Court travels to numerous primary and secondary schools throughout the region with our touring productions, workshops and the Theatresports in Schools programme. Students are also welcomed behind the scenes with theatre tours, work experience and the Court Ambassadors’ programme. By showing rather than merely telling students about set construction, costuming, lighting and sound design, as well as allowing students to observe professional actors and directors in the rehearsal process, The Court creates a unique practical learning environment impossible to replicate in the classroom.

At a tertiary level, The Court encourages and supports the next generation of aspiring theatre professionals. TheatreWorks is a year-long, part-time training programme run at The Court Theatre that allows 18-30 year-olds to learn from professionals - the perfect “bridging” programme for those wishing to apply to a full-time drama school or improve their craft. Close ties are maintained with training institutions across the country to feed back into the growing pool of emerging talent.

The Court Jesters hold regular Improvisation Classes on Wednesdays and Sundays for those interested in the art of comedy, Theatresports and improvised theatre, which can lead to employment and further career development.

The Court also offers its wealth of knowledge to businesses as a way to improve public speaking skills, unlock the creative and artistic impulse and boost morale amongst staff. We create tailor-made programmes specifically designed for any company or individual wishing to harness these skills to enhance their professional performance.

In addition to these numerous programmes, The Court Theatre is actively involved in national and local educational groups, forums and committees; and welcomes enquiries or feedback from any interested people and groups. As a result, its Education Programme is among the most comprehensive in the country.

The Court Theatre is not only New Zealand’s top-performing professional theatre company, it is also an organisation totally committed to encouraging and fostering the next generation of talent – from primary to tertiary level, and beyond.
